Chef Orazio D’Elia Announces New Venture, Da Orazio Pasticceria

The new bakery offers Italian pastries, made-to-order cakes and focaccia paninis.

You may have heard the name Orazio pop up in Sydney’s dining scene. Best known for their delicious wood-fired pizzas, Da Orazio is the brainchild of Chef Orazio D’Elia, who wanted to bring a slice of Italy to Sydney. Now, D’Elia has opened his newest venture, Da Orazio Pasticceria, as well as a limited beachfront pop-up, focusing on offering traditional Italian pastries with a French twist.

The menu was inspired from a research trip through Italy, with D’Elia and his seven-year old son sampling desserts from the country. “It was a great experience falling in love with Italian pastry through his eyes and I am so happy to bring my favourites from the trip to both venues” D’Elia said. Amongst the favourites are Da Orazio Pasticceria’s signature Maritozzi, a soft brioche bun filled with orange and vanilla cream on the inside. You can also find other treats like cannoncini (baked pastry wrapped around whipped cream, chocolate and coconut), as well as tette della Monaca from Puglia, a soft sponge cake filled with pistachio crème and coated in pistachio Nutella.

Da Orazio Pasticceria focuses on traditional and modern pastry techniques, with two pastry chefs leading the team. Antonio Giotta from southern Italy practices traditional baking styles, whereas Andrea Manna from nothern Italy takes a modern approach to Italian cakes and pastries. Order individual portions of cakes like freshly piped cannoli, Paris-Brest, fruit tarts and croissants. For larger celebration cakes, you can choose between tiramisu, millefoglie, ricotta & pear, lemon meringue tart, and a rich Basque cheesecake. Daily paninis will also be available, with the much loved porchetta focaccia from pizza + porchetta’s menu making an appearance once in a while.

To celebrate the new launch, D’Elia is giving Bondi locals a sneak peek of the pasticceria’s baked goods, located next door to Da Orazio Pizza. From now till the end of June, sample all the signature pastries, including D’Elia’s favourite dishes: Maritozzi, tetta della monaca, and code d’arogosta.
