Woollahra’s Victor Churchill celebrates 10 years with a new-look flagship store

Eat, Sydney / 23 September 2019

Since opening its doors on Queen Street in 2009, the fine meats purveyor has been an Eastern Suburbs icon. Now, the team is ready to grow.

A trip to the butchers tends to be a grab-and-go encounter. A quick visit to stock up ahead of a big family BBQ or Sunday lunch. But one look at Wollahra’s Victor Churchill will confirm this is anything but a transactional experience. It’s a beautiful destination delivering the finest quality produce and meat in Australia.

Founded in 1876, Victor Churchill stands as Australia’s oldest continually run butcher shop. For the past 143 years, the venue has been a beloved part of the Woollahra community, co-founded by the Churchill family and Victor Puharich (a fourth-generation Croatia butcher who emigrated to Australia in the 1970s). Here, tradition and the craft of butchery is celebrated with 5 generations of family history embedded into the business.

In 2009, Anthony Puharich opened Victor Churchill’s Queen Street location as a gift to his father. And since then, the venue has welcomed a slew of big-name celebrities through its door, including the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Anthony Bourdain who calls it “the most beautiful butcher shop in the world.” The venue’s theatrical, luxurious interiors haven’t gone unnoticed abroad either, recently winning an International Retail Design award in New York.

Fast forward to today, Victor Churchill’s passion for unprecedented quality remains unchanged. And with the coming of the flagship store’s 10th anniversary, the team has made a string of big announcements to celebrate.

First up, the Woollahra flagship store is set for expansion. Working alongside Vince Alafaci and Caroline Choker (the award-winning design team ACME & Co), their existing space is set for a fresh new look with Victor Churchill Woollahra 2.0 set for completion in the tail end of 2020.

Next, the team has their sights set on a second space, planning to take the Victor Churchill experience to Melbourne with a new store slated to launch in late 2020.

Plus, they’re welcoming new faces to the family with Shannon Debreceny of Chippendale’s LP’s Quality Meats joining the team in Woollahra as Head Chef. With so much on the horizon, there’s plenty of reason to stop by for a top-notch butcher shop experience.
