The Owl House

Bars, Sydney / 15 January 2011

There’s a new bar in the 2010 zip code and chances are your night is guaranteed to be a hoot!  You’ll find The Owl House on Crown St close to William St and around the corner from Love Tilly Devine. In its former life the The Owl House was a sandwich shop but rest assured there’s no soggy bread at this wine bar. Instead you’ll find a small tapas menu and great selection of local and international wines. Darlo punters have the option of two levels and whilst upstairs has more space the lighting and atmosphere downstairs is great for a casual drink or nibble at the bar. The owners and staff are friendly and a welcome addition to the neighbourhood. Sydney-siders are spoilt for choice of watering-holes in the east and there are more established bars with a better vibe on offer but after just two weeks the place is buzzing with curious customers. If Love Tilly Devine is full you can always come here for a drink and vice versa. Add The Village in the mix and you’ve got yourself a mini bar-crawl!

*Note: I returned to The Owl House a week after this post and tried some of the dishes on offer. They were hit and miss.
Hit: 1) The lamb shoulder was wholesome, fresh and hearty- as good as it looks! 2) Salt and pepper calamari was tender on the inside, crisp on the  aioli blackened with squid ink was delicious.

Miss: 1) Not a fan of the steamed zucchini flowers…steaming stuffed zucchini flowers?? They were a little soggy and the peas were bland. 2) The sirloin- great in theory, loved the sound of this dish but it was too smokey. Left a bad aftertaste.

Sirloin wrapped around marinated feta

Wish I tried: Portobello mushroom stuffed with ricotta, porcini, served with rocket yoghurt foam and balsamic glaze
Wine list is great, had a great bottle of bubbles. Would love to hear what others thought. 🙂
