The Barrie, Chippendale

Bars, Drink, Sydney / 9 June 2021

Freda’s no more, but say hello to the newest late-night cocktail bar and live music haunt in Sydney.

Although Sydneysiders were quite distraught to see Chippendale nightclub Freda’s shut its doors, we’re pretty sure they’ll be pleased with what’s taken its place. The Barrie is the cities newest drinking hub with all of those late-night cocktail bar den vibes. Expect to lose track of time as you sip your way through the cocktail list with a backdrop of live music every night – think swing, blues, and early rock. There will even be local DJs on Friday and Saturday nights to get you in the mood and the best part, the music doesn’t stop till 4am.

Chris Garner is behind this new venture and is better known for his hospitality skills at Hubert, Rockpool Dining Group and Employees Only. This may be his first bar opening, but it sure seems like he knows exactly what he’s doing. “I always loved Fredas. I loved the energy and the atmosphere they created. When I saw that site had come up on the market, I applied, despite the challenge of filling Freda’s shoes. We went back and forth. It fell through. I had given up until they called me back and said do you want to have a second look? The rest was history.”, said Garner.

The Barrie is set to deliver the same spirit as bustling Freda’s under the new concept. The venue is lively, yet sophisticated, or you could say unpretentious and classy, however friendly. It’s a bar for everyone and is licensed to seat up to 120 people. Round up your crew, we know where we’re going this weekend!
To drink, beer and wine goers will be pleased by an all Australian list that has been curated to please everyone’s palate. Why bother branching out of Australia when we hold some of the best beer and wine right here in Sydney. Cocktail enthusiasts will sip original recipes like Barrie’s Estate with Bulldog Gin, Cinzano Bianco, elderflower, apple, cinnamon, chamomile, peach bitters, and citrus whites, as well as the Muted Ceremony with Appleton signature blend rum, Tempus Fugit Banana, salted caramel and citrus. To eat, you can snack over a number of shared plates including charcuterie from LP’s Quality Meats and a selection of premium cheeses.

Oh, and wondering who Barrie is? It’s Chris Garner’s grandfather – that’s all we know. “The Barrie is a space for everyone. A place where you can be you. We don’t take it too seriously. We love to have a joke and take the piss out of life – just like the real Barrie.”, says Garner.

The bar is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 4pm – 12am, Thursday from 4pm -2am, Friday from 4pm – 4am and Saturday from 6pm – 4am. Find out more HERE
