With a trio of popular venues in Melbourne, say hello to the newly opened D.O.C. Pizza & Mozzarella Bar Sydney.
It took close to three years for D.O.C Group‘s co-founder Michael Costanzo to find the perfect Sydney site. But the decision to set up camp in Surry Hills was an easy choice. “We felt that Surry Hills is the food hub of Sydney,” Michael tells. “D.O.C Sydney is a smaller venue, more refined architecturally. Sydney has more of a bar setting as opposed to the Melbourne venues so we felt that it was a great space for what we wanted to do here.”
The site in question is 78 Campbell Street, on the ground floor of one of Surry Hills’ newest commercial spaces. After building a dedicated local following at their three sites across Melbourne, the team knew it was time to bring their authentic Italian pizza and mozzarella bar concept to Sydney. For diners, D.O.C. delivers a simple Italian classics served in a unique bar-style setting.
“Expect an old school Italian food and wine experience, simplicity refreshed with contemporary flair,” tells Michael. The 42-seater space (along with four enviable alfresco seats), is part dining room part wine bar and all parts delicious. The hope is for the venue to become a bustling local favourite. “We would love for diners to come in for a drink with a simple antipasto board or a bowl of Sicilian green olives while waiting for a table to come up in the dining room,” tells Michael.
So, what will you be eating and drinking at D.O.C. Sydney? Expect crispy, springy pizza bases topped with simple ingredients, along with an ever-evolving list of pizza specials. Currently, the kitchen is serving a fig-focused white-base pizza with gorgonzola, fresh figs, buffalo mozzarella and San Daniele prosciutto (with vegetarian specials also in the works). The classic Pizza D.O.C San Daniele (a favourite among Melbournians) will be making an appearance on the menu, topped with San Marzano tomato, DOP buffalo mozzarella and D.O.P San Daniele Prosciutto ($27).
But pizza isn’t all you’ll find on the menu. Expect a strong antipasto offering centred around fresh buffalo mozzarella (flown in direct from Italy) alongside local cheeses made to be enjoyed over a glass of wine. Plus, you’ll also find D.O.C’s signature lasagne and lavish pasta dishes topped with pork, vegetables and more. And to you’ll also be able to sip your way through an extensive menu of local and Italian wines, including a curated selection of natural wines available by the bottle and glass. But keep an eye on the menu, with Michael revealing new exciting dishes will be launching soon.
