Brunch at The Bourbon

The last time I was at The Bourbon was for dinner around the time it relaunched earlier this year. I was really impressed with the food and the new fit out so when I was invited to check out their new brunch menu my expectations were high. Despite a miserable morning of rain and strong winds in the surf down at Bondi the clouds had parted and it was nothing but blue skies.
Myself and dining companion Ms St Kilda were seated right outside in the front courtyard where live music was playing and Sunday strollers were walking past in the sunshine. We started with a juice, freshly squeezed from seasonal fruit and vegetables bought from the neighbouring Kings Cross markets. In fact most of the produce used in the brunch menu is from the KC markets with Head Chef James Metcalfe and the team keeping it local.

Watermelon, mozzarella, chilli and mint salad ($16)

The menu is fun and simple with something for the healthy eaters and the sweet toothed, bacon loving “eat now, run later” foodies such as myself. The baked eggs come two ways, the more traditional with chorizo and tomato but I suggest trying them with goats cheese and honey for something different. The watermelon and mozzarella salad is a light and refreshing accompaniment to some of the heavier dishes such as the fried chicken with slaw or the boudin noir slider, made with a French style blood sausage.
The belgian waffles with banana syrup and smoked bacon are delicious but overwhelming for just one person, this dish should be shared. It’s rich, intense and definitely not healthy but the flavours work so well together it’s hard to resist (even if it’s just a bite of someone else’s).
Brunch at The Bourbon is easy, laid back and relaxed. Living close to Potts Point i’ll be back very soon, possible next weekend for a bloody Mary, avocado on toast and a Campos coffee. I think I better keep the twinkies and Budweiser to a ‘once a month’ indulgence.
