The Toxteth Hotel, Glebe

Tick tock, time you visited The Toxteth Hotel.

Affectionately known by locals as ‘The Tocky’, The Toxteth Hotel is a Glebe favourite. Located at the far end of Glebe Point Road, this corner-side pub has been pouring pints for decades. It underwent major renovations in 2012  by the Riversdale Group (who also own Lo-Fi, Miss Peaches, Kinselas and more) and has since become known for its British gastropub style food.

Head Chef, Marc Cartwright changes the menu weekly to reflect the change in seasons, featuring different fresh produce. Having crafted his cooking skills in France, Marc has worked in some of Sydney’s finest kitchens, including Longrain and Quay.
On a warm mid-week evening late last year, we gave the new menu a try. We sat in the busy beer garden and enjoyed a board of ‘pickled things’ ($9), including a boiled egg, onions, dill cucumbers and mustard salt. The saltiness worked well with a schooner of craft beer chosen from the Tocky’s huge selection.

A range of fresh summer dishes were chalked on the specials board that evening, including a warm salad of baby turnips, carrots, pearl barley and rocket dressed with caramelized chardonnay dressing, and a salt and pepper soft shell crab salad, served with broccoli, beansprouts and chilli jam dressing.
In the end we opted for the roast salmon dish that came topped with a generous portion of chorizo, on a bed of capsicum puree, with a watercress, radish and quinoa salad. It was a hearty dish, with the salmon cooked crispy and just right.

The other tempting salmon option was a cold salad with iceberg, soft egg, black quinoa, raw zucchini, parsley and buttermilk vinaigrette.
My vegetarian guest selected from the permanent year-round menu, ordering the cauliflower and eggplant yellow curry. The roast coconut, coriander and soft boiled egg served on top complimented the light, Asian flavours. The portion was also very hearty!
You can still order your pub classics, like chicken schnitzel, parma, bangers and mash, and steak. A selection of $14 meals, including burgers, fish and chips and steak are also available at select times Monday – Friday.
If you’re looking for more cool bars to check out in Glebe we suggest paying a visit to The Thievery.
