Surry Hills has a new hidden bar, Soul Trap

Bars, Drink, Sydney / 13 December 2017

You’ll find cocktails with a side of hat-making at the newly opened Soul Trap Small Bar in Surry Hills.

When it comes to hidden bars, you could say we are a little obsessed. So much so that we recently collated a list of Sydney’s 30 Best Hidden Bars at Eat Drink Play. The latest edition to this seemingly ever growing list is Soul Trap small bar. Opening its doors in late November, this Surry Hills gem is the brain child of small bar connoisseur Christophe Lehoux.
If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Lehoux was until recently co-owner of Pocket Group, which included Button, Stick Bar, Pocket, Crooked Tailor, Pocket Terrigal and Lockwood in Paris. This is before he sold his stake in the House of Pocket Group to focus on new a solo venture.
With a passion for millinery workshops, Lehoux has in a slightly left-of-centre manoeuvre, brought hat making to the bar. Cocktails come first and foremost, but if you travel to the back of this moody underground world you’ll find a display cabinet adorning a range of house-made hats. All hats are available for sale, in between sips of your cocktail of choice. Accompanying a range of seasonal cocktails are also Australian beers on tap plus organic and biodynamic wines, fronted by Bar Manager Josh Craker.
On the food menu are crowd pleasers such as ploughman’s boards, alongside other tasty delights such as a pumpkin, feta and almond dukka tartine and Pissaladière, a pizza esque creation topped with caramelised onions, olives and anchovies. The perfect match to a cold brew or cocktail, if you ask us.
