There’s nothing foul about Merivale’s newest cocktail bar, The Smelly Goat.
You may be familiar with one of the newest members of the Merivale family, Queens Hotel. Opening its doors late last year in Enmore, this historic building was transformed into an airy two-level establishment. And whilst our attention has been drawn to the downstairs restaurant we thought it’s time to make a short trip upstairs to The Smelly Goat.
With features of dark timber and taxidermied birds, this quirky cocktail bar gives the classics a flavourful twist. Head Bar Manager Harrison Westlake has conjured some head-scratching concoctions, including the Dutch Courage, a combination of Maker’s Mark, white wine, carrot juice and cardamon ($17).
Other cocktails include the Genghis Can, a drink strongly reminiscent of a Bloody Mary – made with Wyborowa, tomato, hoisin, sriracha and shiitake mushroom ($17). If you’re searching for more familiarity you can also find this summer’s go-to drink, the Aperol Spritz ($15). For a fruity fix it’s hard to bypass the Ron Burgundy, a mixture of Havana Club and Appleton Rum, date, lime and bitters ($18).
The wine list features a mishmash of European and locally sourced drops. Dabble in a Chablis from Burgundy or a Riesling from Germany. If that doesn’t take your fancy, perhaps a Sauvignon Blanc will from across the ditch. On the red wine list, sip on a Cabernet from Coonawarra or a Sangiovese from Tuscany. Whatever way you do it, you’re in for a treat.
The food menu captures the bar food favourites of the downstairs restaurant, with dishes like the salt and pepper squid, silken tofu, prawns and chili bean mayo ($24). Setting your taste buds alight are the Chonq Qing hot and numbing chicken wings ($18). Also making an appearance are crowd pleasers like the scallop and prawn dumplings ($15) and aromatic duck spring rolls ($12).
