Review: Sugarlane, Lane Cove

Eat, Restaurants, Sydney / 20 November 2020

The flavours of Southeast Asia have arrived in the leafy community park of Lane Cove.

Fans of Coogee’s Sugarcane will be delighted to find the same much-loved flavours available from their new Sugarlane outpost at The Canopy, Lane Cove. The new venue emulates the Eastern Suburbs favourite laid back dining style but with its own stylish touches and outdoor area overlooking the beautiful park.

Pull up a seat outside to catch the last of the sun as you take a peek at the vibrant sharing menu. As you decide, choose from a delicious selection of signature house cocktails like the pomegranate margarita ($20) or choose from their list of local and international wines and beer.

It’s hard to go past their Trust Me set menu if you’re in the mood to try lots of different flavours ($60pp or $70pp with dessert). But if you are in the mood to pick and choose, then start with the raw fish platter ($31 for small or $44 for large) featuring a selection of fresh salmon, tuna, and kingfish with three dipping sauces that are packed with a flavourful punch.

The ‘bites’ are all delicious morsels that leave you wanting more. The crispy tortilla with crab, apple, coconut, and lime ($7) in particular is piled high with fresh Asian flavours and the contrast of sweet and tangy is delicious.

From the ‘small’ menu, the roti with house curry and pickled cucumber ($18) is a delectable treat with layers of flaky pastry-like roti that you dunk in a warming milk curry and the cucumber is the perfect palette cleanser.

The famous Wagyu Beef Rendang Curry ($36) is a standout dish and regulars will be glad to see it’s made the menu from the original Sugarcane outpost. Their signature curry is a punchy mix of spicy flavours and the beef is cooked to perfection.

To finish off, choose from the chocolate honeycomb and orange ice cream ($16), black forest parfait ($16), or ice cream ($5 per scoop).

So next time you feel like a walk along the manicured lawns of The Canopy, make sure to stop into Sugarlane for a delicious sharing-style Asian feast.
