Classic hits blasting through the stereo, happy chatter from various lunchers, a glimpse of the chefs busily preparing the next dish – it’s good vibes all the way at this new Rosebery cafe.
Mentmore and Morely is a welcome new addition to the up-and-coming cafe scene of Roseberry. Splashes of green are scattered against the white, polished interior as ferns descend from the ceiling, and intertwine through the 3D installations to one day be full of luscious plants and florals.
Head chef Phillip Davenport brings his food philosophy back to Sydney, after living in Bali for the last seven years. He likes to make food packed with goodness and nutrients, to make going out for brunch a little a lighter on the hips.
Mentmore and Morely offer more than just a regular coffee or fruit juice. Sip on Lucky You green smoothies served in a frosted jar or order something from their page long drinks menu. It’s full of speciality beverages from organic Chinese herbal tea, to organic free trade sodas like celery tonic or hibiscus soda. For your caffeine hit, they use Single O coffee and Sungold jersey milk.
For breakfast, look no further than their boiled eggs on toast with a superfood twist. Beneath the soft boiled eggs, dusted with tumeric is kale, spinach, broccolini, fermented cabbage with a choice of either sprouted bread or Iggy’s sourdough.
We choose the sprouted bread, a grainy rye, that works well with the delicious greens. These eggs, were definitely the highlight of the day, filling us with much-needed energy, along with the added bonus of some satisfying yolk porn.
There’s also other delicious breakfast options that differ from the usual suspects: a chia and coconut bircher, with spirulina and goji berries, and avacado on sprouted bread, with hummus, tomato and labneh.
Lunch doesn’t let down the healthy philosophy either, with five salads brimming, with interesting ingredients, certain to satisfy a big hunger. We loved the raw salad, with it’s surprising mix of vegetables like Japanese mushrooms, daikon, cucumber, radish, seaweed, covered in a spicy yusu dressing.
Our favourite would have to be the Vietnamese coleslaw with fresh, ingredients like savoy cabbage, bean sprouts, and Vietnamese mint with nouc cham dressing. We highly recommend adding the Balinese Pork Belly, a homage to Davenport’s time in Bali.
But there really is so much more to try at this blossoming cafe. Serving breakfast and lunch, and an all-day separate brunch menu, the place is certain to be a hit.
