The iconic pub on Broadway has been reinvigorated with a Parisian wine bar upstairs offering natural wines, freshly sliced deli meats & a killer jaffle selection.
Sydney’s wine bar scene is flourishing with Beau, Bar Copains & Gildas at the top of our must-visit list. To add to it, the Abercrombie has opened a quaint late-night wine bar and shop as part of their multi-level renovation.
Lil Sis is located on the adjoining terrace of the heritage-listed pub in Chippendale and has certainly nailed the aesthetic brief. The shop front is reminiscent of the charming neighbourhood bars in Paris and inside you’ll find still-life oil paintings, timber booth seating, and a neutral colour palate to match. You’ll be taken off the bustling streets into a relaxing space that hosts ample natural light for summer aperitivo.
The wine list caters to all taste preferences, whether you’re looking for natural, biodynamic, or more traditional types. The staff’s wine knowledge (and banter) is excellent and they can easily pick a glass to suit your tastes. The majority of bottles are available by the glass making for an approachable list encouraging exploration.
There’s a small but on-point list of cocktails that take an Italian theme. We’d suggest settling in with the Yuzu Negroni featuring Bombay Sapphire gin, yuzu vermouth & Campari, or the Rose Sbagliato with rosé vermouth, Strawberry Campari & Big Dreams Pet-Nat.
To eat, you’ll find an unpretentious list of snack-style dishes designed for sharing. Start with warm sourdough, chicken liver parfait, a selection of cured meats that are shaved fresh, and local cheeses including our very own Vanella Cheese made in Marrickville. Move on to more curated dishes including the Tuna Crudo with finger lime and the raw beef with Parmigiano, bottarga, and rocket. The dishes may be lighter but you can easily make your way through the menu for a more substantial meal.
The real hype is for the jaffles which make the perfect late-night snack considering the bar is open until 12am most nights. Go for the classic Tripple Cheese, the nostalgic Heinz Spaghetti with cheddar, or the Pastrami on Rye with swiss cheese, pickles, and Russian dressing. They’re also incredibly inexpensive with the Pastrami costing you just $12.
