Right now, it’s hard to imagine the good old days of music festivals. Surrounded by people, listening to live music and dancing your tush off. But come summer, you’ll be ready to dust off your dancing shoes, don your best party outfit and head out for a boogie. Luckily for you, the King Street Carnival will give you the perfect excuse to do exactly that.
Warning: don’t forget to stretch. It will have been a while since you moved your body to live music and we don’t want you to strain anything. Fingers crossed by January we are all free to roam wild once more, with lockdown a thing of the past and nothing but good times ahead of us.
If you’ve been longing for the return of the famous King Street Crawl, you’re in luck. It’s back next year and it’s bigger and better than ever. In 2022, King Street Crawl expands to become King Street Carnival. Kicking off on Friday 14th January this three-day festival takes place between Sydney Park Amphitheatre and Camperdown Rest Memorial Park. Expect a multi-layered, multi-genre festival bringing together established musicians and the hottest emerging artists.
Friday is for the RnB queens and hip hop lovers with record label, Elefant Traks, taking over the Sydney Park Amphitheatre. Horrorshow will be kicking things off, then JessB joins us from across the ditch to help you get into the groove with her signature mix of hip hop, reggaeton and dancehall, before making way for soul trio Planet Vegeta. You’ll also hear Nardean, Half Queen, Carolina Gasolina and Dameeeela.
The tempo drops on in the amphitheatre on Saturday to make way for body-moving guitars with headliners You Am I. There’s also Magic Dirt, Hayley Mary and Melbourne pub-punk outfit, Private Function. Continuing the impressive locals list, you’ve got Johnny Hunter, Sydney’s cult garage punk band Shogun & the Sheets and a necessary dose of neo-psychedelia, courtesy of The Laurels.
A hop, skip and jump away at Camperdown Rest Memorial Park, Western Australian Stella Donnely makes her way to the main stage. You’ll also be treated to tunes by Middle Kids, The Lazy Eyes, The Buoys and Joseph Liddy & The Skeleton Horse.
Things wind down at the Amphitheatre on the last day of the festival, making way for a blissed-out Sunday session featuring a nostalgic fusion of funk, disco and electronica. First up is Confidence Man and Touch Sensitive, followed by Melbourne favourites Harvey Sutherland. Then, Milan Ring and CLYPSO will turn Sydney Park into a jungle party.
The star studded lineup in Camperdown will be headlined by Yothu Yindi, and includes ARIA Award winner Sarah Blasko, Alex The Astronaut, All Our Exes Live In Texas and Emma Donovan & The Putbacks.
While you’re used to seeing these popular Inner West parks flooded with runners, dogs, and children, the first weekend in Jaurary is set to look a little different.
