Happy First Birthday to The Workers

Bars, Sydney / 30 October 2013

The Workers celebrated its first birthday last Thursday and we were there to help party! It would’ve been rude not to! For their birthday bash The Workers team shouted food, drinks and arranged a line-up of comedians, live music and DJs to entertain the handsome crowd.

Located on Darling Street, The Worker’s entrance can be easily missed so keep an eye out for Zumbo’s patisserie next door . The stairs open up to a massive hall decorated like a LA diner with vinyl booths, neon signs, a bison head and El Yucateco hot sauce. Look up from the bar, do a 180 and you’ll come face to face with portraits of Labor Party’s Bob Hawke, Neville Wran and Gough Whitlam looking down on the shenanigans. Between the bar and the YOLO sign you’ll find the exit to a cute astro turfed roof-top, perfect for a bit of al-fresco drinking and conversation.
The Workers offers a surprisingly long wine list, beers, ciders and cocktails. The food is split into three chapters ‘Viva la Tacos!’, the ‘Slider Diaries’ and ‘The Rest’. We chowed down on fresh corn-chips with creamy guac, juicy buttermilk chicken wings, prawn tacos, jalapeño poppers (deep-fried battered whole jalapeño peppers with cheese and bacon) and Mini Mac sliders. Yes, they do taste like Maccas but without the post burger come-down and heart palpitations.

Funny man Luke Heggie kept the crowd chuckling with ‘oh I get it’ one liners and rockabilly Pat Capocci had everyone toe-tapping and seat wiggling into the night. Not only a great place to catch-up with your mates, The Workers has live music, DJs and comedians every week. Pop in on a Wednesday for free comedy, cheap food and beer. There always seem to be a party on at The Workers. They’re hosting a Halloween bash on Thursday 31st October and a special Melbourne Cup Day celebration. Check out their Facebook page to keep in the loop.
