Grab Your Running Shoes: Take Part In The 2020 City2Surf Virtual Fun Run

Events, Festivals, Play, Sydney / 19 August 2020

Experience the City2Surf’s first-ever virtual fun run, taking place on October 18th, 2020.

Now in it’s 50th year, the City2Surf has been one of Sydney’s most iconic annual fun run events. Bringing together eager runners and walkers alike, the local road race is renowned as the world’s largest fun run, drawing crowds of over 85,000 participants each year from across Sydney and beyond.

In years gone by, the City2Surf has taken runners on a 14km road track from the heart of the CBD to the shores of Bondi Beach, renowned as one of the most loved and largest community running events in the world. And for many Sydneysiders, the event is a bucket list item (earning its place on many lists of the world’s best running races).

But in 2020, social distancing and restrictions on public gatherings have forced the race to pivot. Instead of hosting thousands to race along the same 14km stretch of road in Sydney, the organisers of the 2020 City2Surf have come up with a creative solution to enable the race to go ahead this year.

On October 18th, 2020, the City2Surf will be going ahead as a virtual event, aptly titled The Sun-Herald City2Surf Virtual Run. Instead of running along the usual CBD to Bondi Beach track, attendees will have the opportunity to run any 14km stretch of track they like across Sydney. All participants will have a 12-hour window (6am to 6pm) on October 18th to run the 14km distance, enabling thousands to take part in the event while still practicing social distancing.

While there won’t be any official winners, all participants will still get a medal (sent via the post) to acknowledge their efforts in taking part in the virtual event.

Ready to get running? Entries to the 2020 City2Surf are open now and will cost $39 for adults and $20 for kids. To find out more, click here.
