Now, joining these ranks of must-visit harbourside spots is Canvas Restaurant, a transformative new venue within the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA). Operated by hospitality heavyweights The Big Group, known for bringing some of Australia’s biggest events like the Melbourne Cup and Grand Prix to life, Canvas Restaurant is a first-of-its-kind concept that blends fine dining with dynamic, seasonal culinary talent.

Located on level four of the MCA, Canvas Restaurant offers uninterrupted views of the Sydney Opera House and introduces a creative new dining model designed to keep things fresh. This isn’t your typical restaurant; Canvas is envisioned as a “blank canvas” for rotating chefs, each bringing their unique culinary artistry each season. First up is Josh Raine, the former head chef at the acclaimed Tetsuya’s, with experience in iconic venues such as Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons in Oxford and Pied à Terre in London. Raine’s debut menu showcases bold flavours and refined techniques, reflecting his journey through some of the world’s best kitchens.

This season’s offerings include entrées such as Asparagus with nori, poached egg, and lemon, Raine’s signature Tomato Essence Risotto with fennel and chervil, and Spring Lamb with daikon, Tasmanian wasabi, and hazelnut. Diners can choose between two courses for $85 or three courses for $100, a notably reasonable price for such a unique harbourside experience.

The space has been thoughtfully designed by Creative Director Steffanie D’Alberto and Andrew Gill Architects, showcasing neutral tones and elegant interiors. Tall windows invite breathtaking views of the sea and the Opera House, creating a seamless connection between guests and their surroundings. The calming atmosphere encourages exploration and fosters creativity, allowing diners to fully immerse themselves in the experience, perfectly reflecting the MCA’s ethos.
