Whenever you want to appear sophisticated and worldly, the Art Gallery of NSW is a good place to start. It’s a mecca for culture, romance and conversation-starters, all encased in one historic building. So what could be more perfect for date night, or just a night out doing something different, than the weekly series Art After Hours? Every Wednesday night the gallery stays open until 10pm, well past it’s usual closing time of 5.30pm for people to spend an evening amongst the greats. And best of all, it’s all free!
From 5:30pm, the gallery comes alive with a great list of events scheduled every week. Expect many options to choose from with a film series, talks, live music, forums and much more. Next Wednesday, the 6th of April, there will be a live performance of Mella Jaarsma’s artwork Dogwalk and the night will end with an avant-garde Mexican horror film Santa Sangre for the thrill seekers. Make sure to keep up with the website for the range of each week’s events.
You can also check out their amazing exhibitions on show at the moment with the 20th Biennale of Sydney showing until April and the HSC top achievers being showcased in ARTEXPRESS until May. Plus, enjoy a sneaky glass of wine and a good meal, as both the cafe and restaurant stay open till 9pm on Wednesdays.
