CBD Favourite Launches A New Lunchtime Pop-Up: Longrain Canteen

Eat, Melbourne / 15 May 2024

Longrain, a beloved Melbourne institution, is set to open Longrain Canteen, a casual pop-up eatery.

Located at Suite 1/430 Little Collins Street, Longrain Canteen will offer grab-and-go modern Thai lunches in the former Le Shoppe space.

A Cosy and Inviting Atmosphere

As you step in, a neon Longrain sign greets you, signalling the relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere inside. Rich timbers, green accents, and fresh produce on display make the cosy space inviting. With limited seating available both inside and out, guests can choose to sit for a quick bite or grab their meal to go.

A Menu Full of Longrain Favourites

Longrain Canteen’s menu features lunchtime adaptations of Longrain’s popular dishes. Enjoy the crispy pork hock in a roll, the poached prawn salad with fragrant herbs and glass noodles, and a variety of hot curries, always including a vegetarian option. The fried crispy fish fillets offer a quicker version of Longrain’s famous crisp whole fish. For those with a sweet tooth, the Thai milk tea panna cotta is a perfect finish. The drinks menu includes Chang beer, canned wine, longan juice, and Thai coffee.

A Word from Head Chef Long Le

Head Chef Long Le has successfully balanced the essential elements of Southeast Asian cuisine—hot, sour, salty, and sweet—in a takeaway format to satisfy the CBD crowd.

“Our menu is about tasty, affordable meals that you can eat on the go. We’ve reimagined the flavours and presentation of Longrain classics without compromising on quality and authenticity,” says Le. “I look forward to welcoming both long-standing Longrain patrons and new customers during our lunchtime trade.”

Bringing Thai Cuisine to the CBD

Longrain Canteen also features a Thai pantry, offering staples and authentic ingredients for those inspired to cook Thai dishes at home. This initiative is part of making Longrain’s menu more accessible and affordable.

The Team Behind Longrain Canteen

Alongside restaurateur Scott Pickett and Head Chef Le, Longrain General Manager Natasha Firman leads the new venture. Firman shares, “The concept for Longrain Canteen is about accessibility. We want to make Longrain’s menu available to the west end of the city and also provide an affordable, authentic, and tasty menu during these times.”
