Lavezzi opens its flagship store in Carlton

Embrace summer with a gelato at Lygon Street’s newest gelataria Lavezzi.

For me, nothing is more reminiscent of summer than a deliciously cold gelato on a hot day. At the newest gelato destination Lavezzi, in the heart of Carlton, I get the difficult decisions out of the way – whether to opt for a wafer cone or a cup, and contemplating what flavour combinations to choose (I have a minimum two-scoop rule) – before getting stuck into the taste of summer with my chosen scoops.

From its humble origins as a small kiosk in Ercolano, Naples, Lavezzi has evolved to distinguish itself in the competitive gelato business.
Managing Director Angelo Sperlinga and fourth generation gelato master and gelatician, Raffaele (Lello) Lavezzi were savvy in bringing Lavezzi to a prime location on Carlton’s Lygon Street.
The brand new store is cosy, yet bright and modern, with a small seating area at the back. The pozzetti counter, which is home to all the gelato flavours on offer, evokes childhood memories of excitedly attempting to guess which delectable flavour is hiding under each lid. Luckily for me, my two-scoop-minimum rule means I get to taste more than one!

The Lavezzi family boast a long and respected history, creating gelato since 1870. During those halcyon days, Lello’s great-great-grandfather harvested snow from Mount Vesuvius on the Bay of Naples, which was then blended with either lemon and coffee to make sorbets. It should therefore come as no surprise that the knowledge and skill of each generation is passed on and can be tasted in each scoop of Lavezzi.
Today, lemon and coffee remain two of the most-loved flavours at Lavezzi. The traditional family recipes have been passed on to each generation, producing both classic and seasonal flavours, all of which are freshly made on site.
The quality of ingredients in Lavezzi’s gelato is evident thanks to the conscientious approach taken to roasting the coffee beans, the selection of hazelnuts and even the lemons used are specially imported from Sorrento, Italy.
Food intolerances and and dietary choices are catered for as Lavezzi also provide equally delicious gluten free cones and dairy free options.

Indulge that little bit more by taking full advantage of the milk and white chocolate fountain to coat the inside of the cone and drizzle over the top of your gelato. I recommend the chocolate which is heavenly with the fior di latte or hazelnut gelato.
Lavezzi also create a range of cakes, treats and icy cold granita. If you feel like taking a tub home for those “I-really-need-some-ice-cream-stat’ moments, no problem. Half or one litre tubs are available.

If on occasion you crave a late night ice cream fix but can’t tear yourself away from your Netflix series, Lavezzi will also be available to order on Deliveroo and UberEats.
What more could you ask for?
