Grosvenor Hotel, St Kilda: Pub, burger bar, bottle shop & grocery store

Drink, Eat, Melbourne, Pubs, Restaurants / 16 October 2018

With beers, burgers, big screens, a bottle-o and a grocery store, the Grosvenor Hotel is your Southside home away from home.

St Kilda East’s Grosvenor Hotel has been a local favourite since it first found its home on Brighton Road back in 1880, and judging by the crowds in the lead up to the Grand Final, nothing has changed.
The labyrinthine hotel complex houses a bistro, two bars, and various function rooms available to hire – not to mention the on site grocery store, bottle shop, and drive through burger bar. Whether you’re looking for an intimate dinner space, somewhere to watch the footy with a beer, or just want to grab a bite without having to leave the comfort of your car, the Grosvenor Hotel has got you covered.
The main bar area has a performance space for live music, a well stocked bar, an outdoor area, as well as the draw for a lot of local footy fans: big screen TVs dedicate to sport. Get in early for a seat in the outdoor area, where footy and cricket fans settle in with a pint. The other bar is a more sedate affair, and shares space with the bistro. For those who love a good deal, the Grosvenor has two-for-one cocktails on Thursday nights throughout the bar and bistro.

The bistro is where the culinary magic happens. A quiet, and much more intimate space, the menu covers traditional pub fare – burgers, five different variations on the classic parma, and a kid’s menu – as well as premium grass-fed Victorian beef, aged in house, and extensive selection of wood fired pizzas that even the pickiest diner will love. And with gluten free bases available at no extra charge, the Grosvenor Hotel can cater to all the needs of your group. Have a big, particularly famished group? For bookings of eight or more, the chefs at the Grosvenor can whip you up a whole suckling pig!
The Grosvenor Hotel’s on-site bottle shop and grocery store stocks a huge range of local and imported craft beers, wines, and spirits – with an awesome array of by-the-can IPAs to impress the mates. Best of all – they have a drive through for those days when you don’t have time to stop. The grocery store also stocks all the bits and pieces necessary to keep you going, from the essential to the artisanal. Whether it’s prime rib to cook at home, chips and dips for a party, or imported pickles to pique your pal’s interest, the grocery store has it all. There’s even organic dog food so your favourite pampered pooch doesn’t have to miss out on the fun.

The St Kilda Burger Bar (SKBB), the Grosevnor’s drive through burger bar, has become the go-to for locals on the go. Don’t let the drive-through fool you, the SKBB may be a quick grab-and-go, but that doesn’t mean they scrimp on quality. Using Gippsland Angus beef for their patties, the SKBB proves quality and convenience are not mutually exclusive. The bar also offers vegetarian and vegan burger options, as well as mini burgers for the ankle biters. If all this talk of burgers has got your mouth watering, then you’ll love their dessert menu with ice-cream sandwiches (the jam doughnut ice-cream sandwich is my personal fave), as well Scoops and Smiles gelato and sorbet, milkshakes, and the famed SKBB Magnum.

Whether you’re looking for somewhere to chill with a beer and watch the footy, have a romantic date night dinner, or you’re looking for dinner on the run, the Grosvenor Hotel has it all.
After dinner, take a wander down to the beach and stop in at the newly refurbished Captain Baxter to take in some sea views with a cocktail or two.
