Dan Murphys Discovery Bar at Triennial Extra is a collaboration between artist and bartender inspired by the iconic NGV garden.
The NGV Triennial Extra follows on from the NGV Triennial, taking on all levels of the NGV International in a 10-night program of art, performance, fashion, music, design, food and ideas. Featuring both local and international performers, the festival explores all senses in that unique way that we’ve come to expect from the NGV, including the impressive Dan Murphys Discovery Bar that takes over the iconic NGV garden.
The NGV Garden, where the Dan Murphys Discovery bar is located, isn’t any regular old bar. Instead, it’s a bar of discovery, designed by Melbourne artist and designer Ryan L Foote, who found inspiration for its creation through multiple sources:
“One of which is classic sculptures that often depict people reclining and drinking. Drawing from that idea I have created a series of modern daybeds that reference these classic reclines as well as stone pedestals which guests are invited to lounge on turning themselves into living sculptures” said Ryan.
Dan Murphy’s Spirit Ambassador Charlie Ainsbury has carefully curated cocktails specifically for Triennial Extra. Inspired by classic cocktails, Charlie has introduced elements that are experiential, such as adding dry ice to a liquid to create an aromatic foam. Ainsbury is co-owner of popular Sydney bar, ‘This Must Be The Place’ and winner of Time Out’s Best Cocktail Bar 2017. Ainsbury was named Australian Bartender of the Year in 2016 and 2014 for the Diageo World Class.
Ainsbury has created five cocktails that are an homage to the sculpture garden and the surrounding art and are perfect to sip on as you take in a summers night with friends.
With a nightly line-up of live music and electronic DJs, the NGV Garden will bring together ‘extra’ visitors and utilises the iconic outdoor setting as a site for interaction and socialising.
With five cocktails on the menu, inspired by bar classics, there’s something for every palate. But here’s a sneak preview of two of our favourites:
Native Mist

Gin, lemon myrtle, lemon, prosecco, absinthe and dry ice (dissolved).
Flamenco
A spin on a Prohibition-era cocktail, with a pomegranate molasses twist.
