A new culinary destination is on the horizon for Melbourne’s dining scene. Orlo, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant and bar, will open its doors in early June. Located on Oxford Street in the historic Dyason Cordial Factory, this venture promises to add a vibrant touch to Collingwood’s eclectic mix.
A Historic Setting
Orlo is nestled in the Dyason Cordial Factory, a charming 19th-century building. This venue’s rich history perfectly complements the new dining experience. The character of the building will shine through in Orlo’s various dining areas, catering to different occasions. Whether it’s an alfresco lunch on Oxford Street, a cosy date night on the mezzanine, a private event in the enclosed courtyard, or a cocktail session in the downstairs bar, Orlo has it covered.
The Dream Team
The driving force behind Orlo is seasoned hospitality owner James Klapanis of Eastern Grace Group, known for St. Cloud Eating House and Young’s Wine Rooms. With over 40 years in the industry, Klapanis has brought on Matteo Tine as Executive Chef and Creative Director. Tine, known for his work at Grossi Florentino, Bar Carolina, and Pixie, brings his rich Sicilian heritage and vibrant culinary influences to Orlo.
“I’m very excited to work with Matteo on this one,” says Klapanis. “There’s a profound joy in uncovering these hidden gems and crafting environments that serve as canvases for passionate chefs and hospitality enthusiasts.”
Culinary Delight
Matteo Tine’s approach melds Italian cuisine with flavours from other countries. “With my Sicilian background, I primarily and instinctively lean on Italian cuisine, but I embrace techniques and flavours from other cuisines,” Tine shares. He hopes this blend will shine through in Orlo’s dishes, creating a sophisticated yet fun dining experience.
Tine has also assembled a stellar team, including Head Chef Simon Polkinghorne and Manager Chris Dobson. They promise a fun, fast-paced restaurant with a ‘bistroesque sophistication’.
Drinks and Design
Orlo’s beverage program is equally impressive. Carlo Grossi, known for his work across the Grossi Group, will curate a wine list that mirrors the Mediterranean style of the food. Bartending heavyweight Joe Jones (Romeo Lane, Purple Pit) will consult on the drinks menu. It will feature signature cocktails and seasonal cordials served in old cordial bottles, a nod to the building’s history.
The design of Orlo, led by McCluskey Studio, aims to maintain the charm of the heritage building. Founder Kate McCluskey Kyle emphasizes a balance of historic and contemporary elements. Reclaimed materials and vintage furniture create a cohesive and inviting atmosphere.
Opening Soon
Orlo is set to open at 44 Oxford Street, Collingwood, this June 2024. It will be open seven days a week, from 12pm to late. Keep an eye on this space for what promises to be a delightful addition to Melbourne’s dining scene.
