Review: L’Hôtel

Cool Sh*t, Play, Sydney / 17 October 2022

L’Hôtel is where live performance merges with food, fashion and design within the Sydney Opera House.

Following its successful premiere at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival in 2021, L’Hôtel has come to Sydney. Directed by Craig Ilott of Spiegeltent and Sydney Festival’s multi-award-winning Smoke & Mirrors and Pigalle, L’Hôtel is a masterpiece of cabaret, burlesque, aerial and circus performance.

Set in a Parisian hotel lobby, the show is slowly revealed as the audience dines. This is immersive entertainment at its best. Guests are greeted with a ‘Bon Soir’ and guided to their tables by a French-speaking maître’d. In the centre of the room is a large table filled with bottles of French champagne and cheese platters. The atmosphere is busy; Bellhops and luggage handlers weave between the tables, as diners sip champagne and nibble on the cheeses.

There are two ticket options for L’Hôtel: Le Voyeur and Le Salon. Those who secure Le Salon seating will be among the action. Flash mob-style, waiters will be pouring champagne one minute and breaking into choreographed dance moves the next. For those who prefer to view the action, then consider Le Voyeur balcony seating. Wherever you are seated you’re in for a visual treat.

The night is a whirlwind of entertainment and the cast members are gold standard, hailing from France, Belgium, Russia, America and Australia. There are nine featured acts including musicians, a French chanteuse, a pole dancer and acrobats. Exceptionally strong performers in each routine.

Parisian jazz singer Caroline Nin begins, singing a beautiful rendition of Edith Piaf’s La Vie En Rose. A luggage trolley flies into the air as Russian aerialist and circus artist Masha Terentieva (who has performed with Cirque du Soleil) mesmerizes the audience contorting her body through the bars. Concierge turned pole dancer Bentley Rebel is sizzling in stiletto red boots as he deftly takes control of the pole with his erotic centre stage moves.

The hotel is voyeuristic experience, perhaps best revealed in the bathroom act between Australian dancers Bri Emrich and Lexi Strumolo who perform a very sensual and dexterous movements in a water-filled bath tub.

The enthralling show is tres magnifique and L’Hotel is a unique theatre experience you won’t forget.

Le Salon (lobby service) seating includes a gastronomic French experience including G.H. Mumm champagne, a cheese board and to finish, a delectable chocolate éclair.

Dress code: black-tie. L’Hôtel will captivate audiences at the Sydney Opera House until it finishes on 13th November.
