Australian retailers alone are tossing out over 3 million tonnes of processed and eatable food every year, 80% of which simply because it’s not sold.
Cue Y-Waste, an innovative digital platform designed to reduce the amount of food that gets thrown away. Originally launching in 2017, the concept is simple but extremely effective. Via the app, merchants are able to either donate their end-of-day food or sell it at heavily discounted prices to those looking for a cheap eat in their local area.
So how does it work? Simply download the app and find food merchants in your neighbourhood. At the click of a button, you’re able to come in and pick up perfectly delicious surplus food at a specific pick-up time, all at a considerable discount, sometimes even for free! There’s no exchange of money upon collection either, with all food pre-paid through the app.
