Old Mate's Place Sydney CBD, a Rooftop Hideaway in a Nondescript Office Block
Tucked above an otherwise unremarkable building on Clarence Street, Old Mate's Place has been one of the CBD's most loved hidden bars since it opened in 2018. Take the lift to level four and you land in what feels like an old family library, all arched bookshelves, leather booths and candlelight, before a set of wooden stairs leads up to the real drawcard: a green, plant filled rooftop with 360 degree views over the skyline.
The cocktail list is where Old Mate's earns its reputation, drawing from a back bar of around 300 spirits and changing often enough that regulars keep coming back to see what's new. Expect playful, ingredient driven drinks like the Hidden Pina Colada and Pandan Airways, both of which have landed on national best of the year lists. Food stays simple and satisfying, built around a run of Philly cheesesteaks alongside cheese, charcuterie and shared plates.
It is a walk in friendly venue, with only limited reservations taken and bookings capped at eight people, so it suits a casual drink with a few mates more than a large group event. The building also houses sibling bar Old Love's in the basement, worth knowing about if the rooftop is full.
