Nomad Surry Hills - fire, smoke and Mediterranean flavours in a Foster Street warehouse
Tucked into the backstreets of Surry Hills, Nomad has been one of Sydney's most consistently celebrated restaurants for the better part of a decade, taking out an SMH Good Food Guide chef hat every year since 2015. The kitchen draws on travels through Spain, Morocco and the Middle East, cooking with fire and smoke across a custom woodfired oven and charcoal grill, and pairing it all with a wine list built around small growers making great wine sustainably, sourced from Australia and around the world.
The venue survived a serious setback in 2019 when an electrical fire forced a temporary relocation, but has been back home on Foster Street since November 2020, in a space that doubled its original kitchen and seating. It's now part of the edition Hospitality group, alongside its sister venue Nomad Melbourne, and continues to draw a loyal crowd for its charcuterie, wood-fired mains and 30-seat kitchen counter, one of the best seats in the house to watch the fire cooking up close.
The menu runs from snacks and mezze through to the woodfire grill and oven, with dishes like Maremma duck leg dolma with fesenjan and sour cherry, date-glazed wagyu tongue with labneh, and a 500g CopperTree Farm ribeye with cafe de Nomad. For groups, there's a private Wine Cave that seats up to 24, and set menus for the table from $95 per person.
