Sydney’s First Bottomless Sushi and Japanese BBQ Arrives in the CBD

Sydney’s dining scene is no stranger to high-end Japanese cuisine, but Gyuniku is changing the game.

Opening in the CBD, the venue brings an ambitious offering: premium Japanese barbecue alongside a full-service sushi buffet. Think high-marbled wagyu, fresh sashimi, and an all-you-can-eat experience unlike anything else in the city.

The 110-seat restaurant is split between 30 BBQ stations and 25 tables, allowing guests to grill their own selection of meats—including MB9+ full-blood wagyu imported from Japan—or help themselves to an extensive sushi spread. Traditional Japanese sushi chefs prepare nori rolls, sashimi, and nigiri in-house daily, ensuring quality and authenticity. Prices start at $45.90 per adult and $27.90 per child, with multiple package options available.

Helming the kitchen is Executive Group Chef Joanne Lee, who prioritises premium ingredients and a menu that balances authenticity with accessibility. “Sourcing directly from Japanese butchers ensures we deliver a meal that’s both premium and delicious,” says Lee. “But in today’s market, great food isn’t enough—we wanted to create an experience that keeps people coming back.”

That experience extends beyond the food. The restaurant’s design merges two dining concepts: a yakiniku-style BBQ section with intimate grill tables and a lively buffet inspired by Japan’s bustling food markets. The self-service model—rare in Sydney’s Japanese BBQ scene—eliminates wait times and gives diners full control over their meal.

Gyuniku’s offering goes beyond just meat and sushi. Guests can enjoy hot dishes like sukiyaki beef, cold options like DIY chirashi bowls, and a dedicated sauce station for customisation. For dessert, a DIY frozen yoghurt bar lets diners create their own sweet finale, with toppings ranging from mochi and fruit jelly to chocolate pearls.

“Sydney was missing a self-serve Japanese BBQ concept,” says owner James Sun of Wannian Alliance. “We wanted to fill that gap and create something both visually exciting and seamless for diners.”

With its high-quality ingredients, interactive dining experience, and bottomless sushi, Gyuniku is set to become a standout in Sydney’s Japanese dining scene.
