Sama Sama Serves Up Southeast Asian Fare, Waterside In Barangaroo

Sydney / 8 December 2021

The team behind TOKKI, Marble BBQ & Theo’s Deli have added Sama Sama to their repertoire. Say hello to Sama Sama!

Barangaroo has quickly transformed into a bustling foodie destination with the likes of Cirrus DiningMarble BBQ, Barangaroo House, Corso Brio and so many more. Bae Dining, the hospitality group behind Marble BBQ is working up quite the monopoly in the area with the addition of their new waterside venue Sama Sama. Taking residence in former restaurant Khoi, they have given the space new life and brought Southeast Asian fare to the menu.

Owner David Bae took over the Vietnamese restaurant during the lockdown and used the hiatus to transform the menu under the watchful eye of acclaimed chef Kevin Jeon (China Doll, Longrain, Ms.G’s). The hospitality group already has funky Vietnamese venue Kinhboy under their aprons, so they decided to expand the concept into an eatery exploring flavours from across Southeast Asia.

Sama Sama (meaning, “you’re welcome” in Indonesian) was inspired by David Bae’s travels through places like Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. As he explored the countries and ate his weight in street food, he was inspired by people’s connection to the food they ate and the influence it had on local culture. He brings a slice of this to the streets of Barangaroo.

Kevin Jeon is at the helm of the kitchen as Executive Chef, bringing with him a wealth of experience and his fascination with Southeast Asian cuisine. He blends cooking techniques and ingredients from across the region to create an innovative and delicious menu.
Khoi’s trademark dishes still grace the menu including the Bone Marrow Mi-Goreng, Nahm Jim Kingfish and a tasty Char Kway Teow. Other popular options are the Eggplant Sticks with Yuxiang, Peanut and Mint, Satay Chicken Skewers with Peanut Crumble and Pineapple, Pepper Beef with Kampot Pepper and Basil, as well as Mango Sorbet with Coconut Cream, Lime and Blood Plumb.

There’s also an impressive lineup of wines to match with something to tickle everyone’s fancy. Cocktail highlights include the Tommy Khoi with Plata Tequila, Yuzu, Lime & Agave, the Spice Honey Nectar with Spiced Rum, Elderflower, Cognac and Honey, and the Bloody Lychee Spritz with Lychee Liqueur, Blood Orange Gin, Prosecco and Soda.

Sama Sama is located in the sparkling waterside spot of Wulugul Walk, 33 Barangaroo Avenue. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 12pm till 3pm and 5pm till late. Find out more and book a table here
