When we think of a day out in Surry Hills, we usually think of hopping between cafes, eateries and wine bars. But, what about heading outdoors and exploring this leafy neighbourhood alfresco? On a mission to showcase the best local spots across this thriving suburb, the team from Surry Hills Creative Precinct is hosting PICNIC Surry Hills, a one-day-only foodie event helping Sydneysiders rediscover this inner-city haunt.
In a nutshell, the inaugural PICNIC Surry Hills is a FREE food, culture and community festival that invites punters to grab a picnic basket and grab everything they need for a perfect picnic from participating food outlets across the suburb. This year you’ll be able to score decadent antipasto platters from Pizza Autentico as well as bites from Simply Hummus and the iconic vegan restaurant Yulli’s. Pick your preferred picnic option, take it away in eco-friendly packaging and set up camp in one of Surry Hills’ leafy pocket parks including the iconic Crown Street destination Harmony Park. Plus, you’ll also be able to nab snacks, desserts, hearty lunches and more from handpicked food stalls set up in the park.
Throughout the day you’ll also be able to soak in live entertainment from DJ Adam Love, and Groovescooter’s DJ’s Paris Pomper and Georgie. As part of the official Sydney Mardi Gras program, the event is set to deliver a colourful afternoon with the oh-so-glamorous Devonshire Divas and Axl Rod, the local Merman roving the suburb, ready to help you gram the perfect ‘gram.
A day turns to night, PICNIC in the pub encourages punters to kick on and explore the iconic pubs and watering holes dotted across the suburb. From Tilly May’s (upstairs at the Trinity Hotel) to the Shakespeare Hotel, Dove & Olive as well as many more, get ready for live music, drink specials and good vibes late into the night.
