The Sunshine Inn Is Redfern’s New Vegetarian Neighbourhood Restaurant & Bar

The crew from Golden Gully are taking over the ex-Redfern Continental digs, complete with a gastropub, cocktail lounge and dining room.

Since opening back in 2015, Redfern Continental has been a local favourite. Run by the crew from neighbouring small bar, Arcadia Liquors’, this European bistro was the perfect spot for a midweek feed, date-night or cocktail and snack in their adjoining cocktail bar, Gunther’s Dining Room (GDR).

But after the closure of the restaurant earlier this year, the future of the site has been unknown. That is, until now. In exciting news, the team from Leichhardt’s Golden Gully has scored the keys to the space and will be launching a new venue in just a few short weeks.

Meet The Sunshine Inn, the new neighbourhood restaurant, gastropub and bar opening at 180 Redfern Street this September. Set to open on September 24th, the venue is run by co-owners Dynn Szmulewicz and Daniel McBride along with Executive Chef Emma Evans (ex-Alibi and Golden Gully) heading up the kitchen.

Dynn tells Eat Drink Play, “The Sunshine Inn has something for everyone, think gastropub meets natural wine bar. DD’s (out the back) is a cocktail lounge and dining room where everything is a little bit sexy.”

So, what can you expect from this new spot? In the front bar you’ll find a gastropub slinging honest, plant-inspired eats (including potato scallops, jalapeno poppers, vegetarian meatball subs and more). The focus here will be on fresh, seasonal NSW produce scored from local produce markets.

Head out back to DD’s, an intimate restaurant and bar for a more refined affair. Evans has curated a range of degustation menus celebrating plant-focused eats, local produce and native Australian flavours. Whether you opt for the 3, 4 or 5-course degustation, you’ll be in for a treat with seasonal, local ingredients helping to keep costs down (with the 5-course degustation priced at an affordable $59 per person, bookings essential). It’s possibly one of the best-priced vegetarian degustation menus in Sydney.

The local focus at The Sunshine Inn continues across the drinks lists, with a focus on Aussie drops along with plenty of the best overseas tipples. Expect to sip your way through the best drops from Australia’s budding natural winemakers, with a selection that is both accessible and delicious. As for cocktails, they’ll be both signature Australiana mixes (showcasing local spirits from the likes of Starward, Westwinds, Regal Rogue, Mobius Distilling and Brix) along with creative twists on classic cocktails.

Plus for beer lovers, expect some of Australia’s best craft beers to be pouring from local brewers such as Akasha, Wildflower, Grifter and many more.
