Nour, Surry Hills, Review

Eat, Sydney / 3 June 2019

Nour has had a face lift, brought in two powerhouse chefs and comes with a revamped Middle Eastern-inspired menu.

Executive chef, Ben Williamson (ex-Gerard’s) and Head Chef Mike Dierlenger (ex-The Bridge Room) are putting on quite the show with their new Lebanese inspired menu. Think simple, colourful dishes dosed in spices.

Nour Surry Hills

Pops of millennial pink fill the sophisticated space. A colour palette made tacky by many, is at Nour kept refined and stylish thanks to the help of DS17 Interior Designers. Handmade ceramic crockery and brass cutlery will have you admiring your plate, even while its empty. And boy oh boy you just wait till it’s full.

Start with the ‘Turkish’ house bread, nigella, smoked butter with chickpea miso. This isn’t your regular butter. Instead, it’s whipped making it light and fluffy, with a smoky flavour that will remind you of fond memories made by a campsite fire. Next, try the tomatoes, smoked almond tarator, slated barberries and pickled garlic. It looks simple, but tastes amazing.

The standout dish, and a must try, is the Prawn shish barak fatteh, fermented chilli butter, yoghurt and chickpeas. To the layperson, read: the best prawn dumplings ever. The fermented chilli butter will blow your mind, to the point where neighbouring table guests were already asking when Nour would be selling this magical fermented chilli butter. And when they do, you will be ordering 10. Please share.

For mains, try the share-style Baby snapper ‘samke harra’, chilli, tahini, nuts and succulents (who knew succulents were edible?) for both an artwork and a culinary delight. And the honey brined wagyu brisket, burnt eggplant puree and pickled kohlrabi not only melts in the mouth but will leave you coming back for more.

With flawless service, incredible food and an elegant atmosphere, Nour is the perfect spot when you’re wanting to impress. Be it a work occasion, a date night or hosting an out-of-town visitor, you’re sure to have them praising your choice by the end of the night.
