Moonshine Meet Manly

Bars, Drink, Sydney / 9 September 2011

‘Moonshine.. an illegally produced distilled beverage’

Moonshine, Rum & Cider Bar, upstairs at the Hotel Steyne is the latest edition to developing manly bar scene. Yes, that’s right manly is trying to get their feet wet and catch onto this bar scene makeover that has been revolving around Sydney. The draw back that manly has always had is the distance from the city and the early curfew for bar trading. But with bars like Pony Room, Miss Marley’s, Hemingway’s and now Moonshine popping up they may even start luring east siders over the bridge! *Gasp!

Upon entering Moonshine for the opening party I had flash backs of years gone by; slipping into North Steyne ecstatic my fake ID had worked! But there’s nothing old about this new fit out. They have transformed the bar into a Rocker Billy meets band shed complete with live stage, wooden tables and funky hanging ropes. The bar staff also matched the new fit out. Boys and girls dressed in Rocker Billy get-up, some with quiet funky tattoo.

The focus of this new bar is that they claim they will serve ONLY CIDER AND RUM. Yes, and can I add there are over 16 cider on tap to taste and 100 rums to choose from. So the drink for the night, foreign to me, was ‘Rum & Cider’. I might be a freshman to the cider range but when did this concision come to be? Even my girlfriends were drinking it. I did myself a favour and tried a brand new cider to the market Batlow Cider with a shot of Rum. Which was like a crisp apple cider with a kick up the bum.
This bars revamp is definitely something new to the tanned surfer manly crowd. It’s no Manly Wharf or Shore Club, but it has legs as potentially a good live band venue. We all love trying something new and I think the Manly crowd will too.

Perfect for a summer afternoon sipping on a cider, listening to a live band whilst watching the surfers on the beach beneath.
