Monte Alto Roasters, Crows Nest

Drink, Sydney / 22 February 2017

Take a trip around the world of coffee at Monte Alto Roasters.

It feels like Crows Nest is the dark horse of Sydney’s dining scene. What was once a no mans land between the CBD and the surrounding North Shore ‘burbs’ is now a buzzy neighbourhood profuse with dining options. You’ll find everything from Japanese BBQ jaunt Kashiwa Yakiniku to quirky underground bar The Foxtrot. Let’s not forget about Kürtősh House, serving up slabs of mouth watering sheet cake. Woven into this tapestry is Monte Alto Roasters.

Owner Harry Nguyen is shaking up your typical coffee shop, offering a speciality round-the-world coffee menu. Sip on a Spanish Café Con Miel, or an Austrian Wiener Melange. If that doesn’t take your fancy, perhaps an American Red Eye or German Eiskaffee will. Health buffs rejoice, Bulletproof coffee is also on the menu, as well as an Espresso Spritzer to keep you cool in the warmer months. All coffees cost $5.

Monte Alto roast all their own coffee onsite. Not only do they incorporate their house-roasted coffee into their beverage list, but also the food menu. Next time you’re in the neighbourhood, be sure to taste test their specialty ‘coffee rub’ pulled pork sliders, made with Brasserie bread brioche buns, house made coffee rub pulled pork and Asian slaw ($6). Other delectable coffee-infused food items include the banana bread with espresso butter ($6), the perfect accompaniment to a house made brew.
Those coffee adverse, fret not. Monte Alto also provide a range of caffeine free food and drinks across breakfast, lunch and dinner. Munch down on a Wagyu beef burger ($16), or slurp on a big bowl of pesto pasta ($15). Keep your visit fresh and healthy with a Vietnamese chicken salad ($17). The choice is yours. What you’ll quickly notice though is that this menu draws on the rich multicultural backgrounds of staff, with dishes stemming from their strong familial ties.
