Mekong and Handpicked Wines are Hosting a Special Wine and Spice Experience

Wine, spice and all things nice. Mekong and Handpicked Wines are teaming up for a special wine and spice experience – you won’t want to miss.

Take a stroll along Chippendale’s Kensington Street and the aromatics permeating from Mekong will grab your attention well before any site of the actual restaurant. Serving up an inventive fusion of South-east Asian cuisine (awarded Best Asian Restaurant 2017), at Mekong it’s all about celebrating Indochine’s most highly prized spices, including cinnamon, star anise, peppercorns and more. Paying homage to these flavours, you’re now cordially invited along to a special wine and spice experience on Wednesday 15th August.
Teaming up with Chippendale’s very own urban winery, Handpicked Wines, guests will be taken on a fun and educational journey. It’s here that you’ll travel through the interesting and dynamic world of South-east asian cuisine, learning about optimal wines to pair with each dish.
Working in close collaboration with Handpicked Wines, Mekong’s Head Chef Tiw Rakarin gets set to deliver a carefully curated menu, with each wine pairing thoughtfully selected to accentuate the Indochine spices used in each of the dishes.
The evening will also see one of Handpicked’s top sommeliers there to discuss some of the finer points of wine and food pairing, all whilst you feast on your speciality menu.
Start your night off at Handpicked Wine’s cellar door, where you’ll be poured a crisp Riesling teamed with flavour dense canapés, Mekong’s grilled catfish with betel leaf. With your appetite sufficiently whetted, you’ll then take a short journey over to Mekong. Settling in for the night, you’ll next be poured  a light and fragrant rosé, teamed with aromatic delights including the cinnamon turmeric roasted cauliflower.
As for the mains, expect a shared assortment from both sea and land, including tooth fish, meltingly tender pork hock and Mekong’s prized beef cheek curry. As for the wines, you’ll travel from a floral and aromatic Pinot Grigio towards a bolder Cabernet Sauvignon and 2015 Barossa Valley Shiraz, loaded with spicy dark fruit. You’ll want to make sure you leave room for dessert, with a special Mystery wine served alongside lychee mousse, mango and black pepper.
