Margherita’s Vinoteca, Sydney CBD

Eat, Restaurants, Sydney / 3 August 2016

Get your World Square pizza fix at Margherita’s Vinoteca.

Tucked into the labyrinth that is the World Square shopping complex is Margherita’s Vinoteca. Sister venue to the adjoining Margherita & Co, the Vinoteca serves a more sophisticated fare.
The executive chef Robert Taylor, previously of Swine & Co, has curated a simple yet authentic menu that stays true to the Italian pallet yet does not lack creativity. The Antipasti on offer ranges from the traditional marinated olives and Bruschetta, made with Nduja, ricotta and broad beans, to the more exciting Beef Carpaccio, served with watermelon radish, bronze fennel, cacioricotta and lemon.
The real star of the antipasti, however, is the Burrata. This melt-in-your-mouth cheese, an outer shell of mozzarella with a soft centre of stracciatella and cream, is served on a bed of fried zucchini, mint, basil, oil and balsamic vinegar and tastes a lot like heaven.
For mains, the wood fired pizza is a solid option with the Fromaggio oozing creamy cheese and béchamel and the Anatra featuring Duck, porcini, chestnuts and rosemary. The dough, however, fails to achieve that soft irresistible and delicious texture that comes from 36 hours of proving and a Naples sensibility.

On their pasta menu the pumpkin and ricotta gnocchi is a stand out dish. The soft creamy gnocchi bricks are served in a puddle of sage nut butter and amaretti sauce with crispy sage leaf garnishes. The flavours are mellow and subtle, yet perfectly complement each other, and the contrast of the soft pasta with the crunchy sage leaves is a delicious textural clash.
The desserts are a collection of Italian classics including Tiramisu, cannoli, panna cotta and of course gelato but for a real treat skip the deserts and head straight for the espresso martini!
