George St Deli Brings Traditional NYC-Style Bagels To Sydney

Redfern’s newest deli is giving away 200 FREE bagels from 8am this Saturday to celebrate their opening. Don’t walk, run!

Sydney has quite the collection of cool brunch options including traditional Japanese pancakes at Gram Cafe and Middle Eastern classics at North Bondi Kepos. Adding to the repertoire is mother and daughter duo Anna Berlyn and Bernadette Sheppard with something completly new in the heart of Redfern. George St Deli serves up NYC-style bagels with all of the trimmings, as well as pretzels the size of your head, gooey babka, chewy cookies and fresh lemonade.

The concept was inspired by nostalic memories of the pair visiting NYC bagel store Russ & Daughters. The design brief was to feel like you’re on Fifth Avenue, which means you can expect monochromatic tones and a buzzy atmosphere. The space has a retro feel which is emphasised by the the soundtrack of hits from Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Etta James.

In celebration of their opening, the team will be throwing a ‘Father’s Day Bagel Bonanza’ on Saturday, 3rd September offering 200 free bagels to the first customers who walk in the doors from 8am. We were lucky enough to get our hands on these early and we highly recommend bracing any weather conditions to get your free serve.

If savoury is your style, try the soon-to-be-famous Lox Classic Bagel with smoked trout which has been cured by seafood king Stephen Hodge, cream cheese, red onion, capers and tomato. We also like the Pastrami Bagel with cream cheese, sauerkraut, Russian dressing and swiss cheese, as well as the old-fashioned Egg & Potato Salad with mustard, capers and dill.

When those afternoon sweet cravings hit, go for the Ricotta & Fruit Preserve Bagel, the Nutella Bagel or the Crunchy Peanut Butter Bagel. There’s also Babka by the loaf or slice which is a Jewish sweet braised bread. They offer this in chocolate or cinnamon and it’s a perfect match to Will & Co Coffee which is on the pour.

Gone are the days of Sydney’s sandwich obsession. Open your eyes to the delight of a well-made bagel!

Open Monday – Friday 7am – 3pm & Saturday – Sunday from 8am – 2pm.
