Forget the dictionary definition – Ennui, the new restaurant and bar in Haymarket, is anything but boring.
A fresh and exciting addition to Sydney’s culinary landscape is here with the opening of Ennui on Pitt Street. This new restaurant and bar, hidden inside a heritage-listed building, is the brainchild of three seasoned hospitality professionals: Thomas Bromwich (ex-Chef at Love, Tilly Devine, Stillwater, Hartsyard), Samuel Woods (ex-Manager and Sommelier at Love, Tilly Devine, now at Yellow) and Peter Chan. With a combined wealth of experience garnered from some of Sydney’s most celebrated establishments, the team behind Ennui (pronounced “on-wee”) brings a fresh perspective to the city’s dining scene. The name itself, a French word conveying a feeling of languid boredom or apathy, paradoxically reflects the passion and energy invested in creating this new venture.
Ennui is spread across two-storeys. Upstairs, the restaurant features a menu that celebrates the best of Australian produce with a twist. Bromwich and Woods, drawing on their culinary expertise and global influences, have crafted a menu that is both familiar and exciting. Expect nostalgic touches like Woods’ mother’s chicken wings alongside clever creations like wallaby crusted with Szechuan pepper. A signature duck dish, a culmination of years of experimentation, promises to be a must-try. All complemented by a carefully curated wine list. Downstairs, the lively bar welcomes guests with a buzzy atmosphere. Ex-Earl’s Juke Joint bartender Kiaran Bryant has crafted a cocktail list that takes classic hits and gives them a fresh spin. Think house Highballs with Japanese whisky and maple soda or Espresso martini with macadamia liqueur. Whisky aficionados will delight in Chan’s personal collection, featuring rare finds from around the world. The space itself is a testament to Ennui’s commitment to both heritage and innovation. Located across the street from the Capitol Theatre, the 178-year-old sandstone building has been meticulously restored. The design seamlessly blends the building’s historic charm with modern touches. Downstairs, dark leather banquettes and brass details create a sophisticated ambience, while the upstairs space features a warmer colour palette reminiscent of the Australian landscape.
Ennui is now open and ready to welcome you! Visit them at 461 Pitt Street, Haymarket for a culinary and social experience unlike any other. Make a reservation here and follow them on Instagram here for updates.
