Quench your thirst at El Camino Cantina the Tex Mex haven in The Rocks
Located in the Argyle precinct in the heart of The Rocks, Sydney’s historic precinct, El Camino is dedicated to bringing you their drink of choice – the much loved tequila-spiked Margarita. The venue itself is like no other, flooded with enough neon lights to illuminate the Las Vegas strip. The bar also features two restored 1957 Chevy trunks overflowing with complimentary hot chips and salsas. So pull up a glittery barstool and settle in while you pick your Margarita flavour.
There’s the Classic Margarita – which I highly recommend – flavoured with Mango or Strawberry, or you can sip on the limited-edition, super-sweet passionfruit. They’re served in a in 15oz glass ($15) or 24oz glass ($19), but drop in between 5pm and 7pm and they’ll be half-priced at $7.50 a pop.
And if hot outside, why not try it frozen? Mind that brain-freeze though! Or upgrade to a Cadillac Margarita for an extra $4. If Margaritas aren’t your thing, there’s also a specialty cocktail menu that might tickle your fancy, with eleven concoctions including the jalapeño-infused Sympathy For The Devil ($18) and the coffee-based Money Maker ($19) if you need an extra energy surge.
To soak up that tequila, I recommend ordering some soft tacos (2 for $10, $3 for $12). There’s the flavoursome Steak Tacos, which come with grilled skirt steak, pico de gallo and smoky BBQ guajillo salsa, the Carnitas Tacos featuring tender pork shoulder, salsa verde and cilantro oil or, my personal favourite, the Barboca Chicken Tacos stuffed with grilled poblano peppers, sour cream, cilantro and salsa roja. They’re just the right size to snack on without filling you up too much, and you can mix and match flavours making them great for sharing with friends.
And if you want to party into the night, there’s more than 150 different varieties of tequila to try. Ask the knowledgeable and friendly waitstaff for recommendations if you’re overwhelmed by the sheer size of the tequila menu. If you’re feeling tropical, I highly recommend the 1800 Coconut Tequila ($12), otherwise you can’t got wrong chasing a few shots of the popular Patron Tequila ($16) with a refreshing slice of lime.
If you’ve got a hankering for something spicy, tuck into a basket of Ghost Pepper Chicken Wings ($19). Served with mango chilli vinegar, I guarantee they’ll blow your socks off. But grab the napkins – it’s not easy wiping all that marinade off your fingers…or your face! If you have some time in the middle of the week, drop in on 10c Wing Wednesday where wings are literally 10c all day long, freeing up your wallet for that extra drink (or two).
Apart from the bar and dining room, there is a dedicated 27 club lounge and an electric Tex-Mex-meets-rock’n’roll vibe where the tequila and music flow ’til the early hours.
