Darling Square Celebrates Chinese New Year 2020

Ring in the Chinese New Year with illuminated interactive installations and over 60 spots to drink and dine at Darling Square.

Although New Year’s Eve might be a distant memory already, there’s still plenty of reason to keep the festive spirit going. This January, the City of Sydney’s 2020 Sydney Lunar Festival celebrates the Chinese New Year with unmissable eats and entertainment this summer. And as an official partner of the festival, Sydney’s newest neighbourhood Darling Square is set to light up with large-scale art, live entertainment and so much more.

From January 20th to February 9th, Darling Square is celebrating the Year of the Rat with themed installations to capture the imaginations of Sydneysiders and guests alike. Sydney-based artist Louise Zhang has been commissioned to craft an inspiring 2.7 metre-tall Year of the Rat Moon Gate, framing the entrance to the precinct from Little Pier Street. This one-of-a-kind installation has been designed to welcome good fortune to those that pass through with the addition of traditional motifs to celebrate the CNY season, including lilies, the flower considered luckiest for this zodiac.

As well as this, Darling Square will play host to the Lucky Lunar Lamp Posts custom installation, featuring 40 bright red gloss sculpted rats climbing upon four-metre high lamp posts. Throughout the evenings this summer these installations are set to light up with accompanying soundscapes that activation upon touching the installation.

To complete your CNY experience, Darling Square’s 60 dining destinations are offering a series of limited edition treats to celebrate the Year of the Rat. Experience lobster dumplings and dragon ball ice cream from Made in China, a Yee Sang raw fish salad from Dopa by Devon and even limited edition organic red beetroot noodles from IIKO Mazesoba.

Throughout the festival, a mix of Asian contemporary and pop artists will be taking to the stage with DJs and bands creating the soundtrack to Darling Square’s 2020 LNY celebrations. Head to Darling Square on January 25th from 2pm to experience this live music line-up for yourself.
