A 60-seat newcomer reimagines Levantine flavours through a Mediterranean lens.
Paddington’s dining scene welcomes a new restaurant with the arrival of CANESS, a Middle Eastern tapas bar opening April 15th at the former Café Nino site on Oxford Street.
The concept comes from Erez Nahum (Shaffa, Ezra, Santa Caterina) and Juan Colmenares, who set out to create a space that channels the energy of Tel Aviv’s bars with the rhythm of Mediterranean dining. Expect small plates, strong cocktails, and a mood that lands somewhere between dinner party and neighbourhood haunt.
At the helm is chef Ido Zarmi, who keeps things pared back. “It’s about letting the ingredients do the talking,” he says. His menu favours bold, clean flavours—a dish might feature three elements, but each earns its place.
Standouts include Prawns Saganaki, swimming in a rich tomato and feta sauce, and Grilled Octopus, served with a sharp herb and caper salsa. Even the sides get a thoughtful twist: beetroot meets tahini and burnt orange, while fresh pita comes straight from the hearth. It’s food that’s flavour-first, not fussy.
The drinks list leans Mediterranean with around 80 wines, including over 20 available by the glass or carafe—a deliberate nod to the casual culture of sharing. Cocktails include the Clear Gazpacho, a clarified tomato gin number, and the Figroni, a fig-laced take on the Negroni. There’s substance here, but no pretence.
The 60-seat fitout is warm, minimal, and tactile, with an open kitchen, soft lighting and just the right amount of buzz. It’s the kind of place you can walk into on a Tuesday and stay longer than planned.
In a city full of fusion, CANESS manages to feel rooted and refreshing—mezze with a Mediterranean twist, served without fanfare but plenty of flavour.
“We’re not trying to be a ‘scene’,” says Colmenares. “CANESS is about community, good energy, and that casual feeling of walking into someone’s home.”
CANESS opens 15th April at 226 Oxford Street, Paddington. Book your table here.
