Avi’s Kantini Opens Inside Newtown Pub, The Bank

Eat, Sydney / 5 May 2021

Newtown has a banging new middle eastern-inspired eatery and cocktail haunt.

This week, Newtown is ready to welcome Avi’s Kantini to the hood. You’ll find it inside The Bank, one of Sydney’s favourite live music venues and drinking hubs. Expect it to be loud, loose, and a whole lot of fun with a courtyard that’s perfect for dining in larger groups.
Inspired by the flavours of the Middle East, Avi’s Kantini brings these tastes into the iconic pub setting. From dips, pides, pitas, falafels and meats, you’ll never go hungry. Begin your endeavours with a meze selection including Turkish lamb flatbread with house-made baba ganoush, gooey baked Saganaki cheese topped with lemon, pistachio, honey and rose, or sticky fig glazed chicken wings. Then, move onto the winning combo of pint and pide (soft flatbread). The flavours include spicy merguez sausage, potato and feta, or fennel and tomato. Sweeten it all up with house-made rosewater Turkish delight with candied pistachio.
The cocktails journey around the eastern outskirts of Europe with arak, sumac, pomegranate, saffron, and bergamot helping to dial up the food flavours. Start with a refreshing Karpuz (meaning ‘melon’ in Turkish) featuring tequila, watermelon, rosewater and lime, or Nar (meaning ‘pomegranate’) with vodka, pomegranate, sumac, falernum, and lime. The showstopper is Avi’s take on an espresso martini with a spiced rum, coffee, date and black walnut.

Elliot Solomon, CEO of Solotel Group, says: “Avi’s Kantini is loud, it’s loose, it’s lots of fun and it fits so well within The Bank alongside upstairs music venue Waywards and Uncle Hops craft beer bar. Especially now that live music and entertainment is thriving again, we saw a real opportunity to dial up the food and drink in the courtyard and create another experience for our groups of music-loving guests to enjoy.”

(Opens Thursday 6 May)
