The Summer Night Market returns with a sizzling summer program

Eat, Melbourne, Play / 27 November 2018

Get out of your mid-week slump and head to the Summer Night Market at Queen Victoria Market.

It’s that time of the year again, when Melbourne’s weather teases us with glimpses of sunshine and the Queen Victoria Market hosts the Summer Night Market. Running from 21 November to 20 March, the Summer Night Market brings Melbournians together for a relaxing night of good food, drinks, shopping and entertainment.

The perfect hump day outing, indulge in food from cuisines around the globe. Let your nose be your guide as you are enticed by Brazilian barbeques, Spanish paellas and spit roasted lambs.

Debuting at the Summer Night Market is gravity defying Flying Noodles, one of the most instagrammable and popular dishes at the market. Also a first timer is Colombiantojos, introducing traditional Colombian cuisine including Arepa (grilled cake with cheese, chicken, guac or beef) and Lechona (slow cooked pork with rice and crunchy skin).

Pierogi Pierogi are serving up traditional Polish dumplings, with a variety of delectable fillings including mushroom and sauerkraut. For fresh seafood, try George the Fishmonger’s delicious crunchy prawn popcorn and lobster rolls.

If barbeques trigger fond memories of summers gone by, enjoy tender lamb, chicken or swordfish skewers, straight off the “fornacella” (Abruzzese barbeque) thanks to Abruzzo Lab.

For a sweet ending to the night, you can’t go past Taki’s Balls. Hot doughnut balls generously topped with your sugar fix of choice. Think nuttella garnished with crushed hazelnuts and wafer, or salted caramel with crushed caramel popcorn.

The impending warmer weather will undoubtedly make us all a little thirsty. Luckily, Running Bull Sangria serve up their delicious sangria made using an original family recipe. But fear not, cider lovers can also enjoy a refreshing boutique cider from Coldstream Brewery, and beer aficionados may relish a brew from Brick Lane Brewing Co.

With over 60 stalls, more than 100 specialty shopping stalls, festival bars, live music and entertainment, you certainly won’t be stuck for things to do, eat or drink at the Summer Night Market.

While you’re there, reminisce about your childhood days by playing backyard style games including totem tennis, Jenga and chess.

From 1-24 December, The Air Canada Ice Rink will also make an appearance on market days and Wednesday nights during the Summer Night Market. Who says you can’t have an outdoor ice rink during Melbourne’s summer? And while you’re at it, dabble in some rink-side treats including coffee, maple syrup ice cream, poutine, popcorn and fairy floss.

Before lamenting that it is the end of Summer, be sure to check out the Summer Night Market. You needn’t wait for the weekend to enjoy balmy summer nights and to treat yourself to good food and entertainment.
