Pizza Pizza Pizza is Melbourne’s hidden cocktail bar meets take away joint
Walking down Meyers Lane in Melbourne’s CBD, in between the plethora of laneway bars is a new neon sign in town. It boldly reads: “Pizza Pizza Pizza” followed by “LET’S GET SLICED $4 TONIGHT”. Do we have your attention?
Pizza Pizza Pizza is not much more than a hole in the wall and as the name so obviously states it’s all about, you guessed it, pizza. You can order by the slice or order a whole pizza pie, but why opt for one pizza when you can try a slice of each flavour? Think truffle mushroom, Hawaiian, pepperoni, margarita, double cheese margarita and even… triple cheese margarita (Parmesan, Mozzarella, Boccocini). If you’re cheese fans like us, the triple cheese is the way to go, it’s our favourite.
The fit out inside is very minimal, with some 70s’ style wallpaper and a red bench below – the only place it seems you can take a seat. Or is it? We were told Pizza Pizza Pizza was take away only, no dining in.
But if you linger long enough, expect to be surprised when you’re ushered through a thick black curtain and offered a seat “out the back”, which turns out to be an uber cool, 70s style cocktail bar complete with intimate booths, sweet tunes, dim lighting, a DJ deck and table service. Jackpot!
Take a seat and kick back with a generous slice of pepperoni, which comes served on a white paper plate and black check napkin.
The cocktail list resembles a beach side bar featuring drinks from a classic rusty nail and old fashioned to frozen pina coladas, Japanese slippers and Alabama slammers. They also have a list of house shots, house shakes and house beers. There is no wine list but you can order off menu from a selection of two reds or two whites.
Upon taking a seat our paper plates are swapped for the real deal and our drink orders are taken. It’s a Thursday night at 6pm and we are the first to arrive to this secret bar. But we can imagine come the wee hours of the morning this secret abode will be buzzing with Melbourne’s trendiest crowd and pizza lovers alike.
