Tera Bar and Teramoto Bring Two Distinct Japanese Dining Experiences to Surry Hills

Eat / 14 May 2026

A neighbourhood sake bar and an intimate chef’s table from husband-and-wife duo Taka and Wanaka Teramoto.

Sydney’s Japanese dining scene welcomes an exciting new addition this month with the opening of Tera Bar, a relaxed neighbourhood sake and wine bar on Devonshire Street in Surry Hills. Created by husband-and-wife team Taka and Wanaka Teramoto, the venue offers a more personal expression of the pair’s culinary philosophy, one grounded in seasonality, warm hospitality and a deep respect for both Japanese tradition and Australian produce.

While Tera Bar is designed for casual evenings over small plates and a carefully curated drinks list, it also houses Teramoto, an eight-seat chef’s table omakase experience set to open in July. Chef Taka Teramoto brings an impressive résumé to the kitchen, with experience spanning Michelin-starred Restaurant Pages in Paris, Florilège in Tokyo, and Sydney favourite Kuro Bar & Dining, where he earned his first chef’s hat. At Tera Bar, his menu blends Japanese flavours with French technique, showcasing premium Australian ingredients in dishes that are precise yet approachable.

On the drinks side, sommelier Wanaka Teramoto has assembled a considered list of artisanal sake and wines from Australia, Japan, and beyond. The aim is to create a dialogue between food and drink, with bottles selected for balance, drinkability, and their ability to spark conversation around the table.
