Spice Temple Marks A New Chapter In Dining After 15 Years

Eat, Restaurants, Sydney / 17 October 2024

A refreshed interior and revamped menu bring a new level of sophistication to Sydney’s iconic Spice Temple.

Spice Temple has been a cornerstone of Sydney’s dining scene for over 15 years, and it just got a stunning refresh. Part of the Hunter St. Hospitality family (home to favourites like The Cut Bar & Grill which has recently reopened in The Rocks and Rockpool Bar & Grill), this iconic spot has levelled up its ambience to match its Hatted menu.

Tucked away on Blight Street, descend the stairs into the dimly lit, sultry dining room you know and love, now elevated with bold touches of burnt wood, brass accents, exposed brick, and a hint of neon red. It’s got that perfect blend of old-school Chinese charm with a modern twist. And with space for 180 diners, those coveted weekend bookings might be easier to snag.
Executive Chef Andy Evans, who’s been at the helm since day one, continues to push the boundaries of modern Chinese cuisine in Australia. The menu now features a nod to nostalgic Chinese dishes from the ’80s, like the pork and prawn omelette, Yunnan pineapple fried rice with bacon, and Hong Kong chicken curry. But don’t expect your standard fare – this is Spice Temple, after all.
A few signatures we can’t get enough of? The Northern-style lamb and cumin dumplings with crunchy, spicy hot sauce; the melt-in-your-mouth Dong Po pork belly served with a crispy shallot pancake; and the fiery Kung Pao chicken, spiked with Sichuan peppercorns, heaven-facing chillies, and cashews. Fair warning: it’s not for the faint-hearted, but it’s seriously worth the heat.
And in a fun new twist, Evans has introduced live cooking stations with hot pots, making your dining experience even more interactive and sensory. This revamp isn’t just about a facelift – it’s a full-on elevation of one of Sydney’s most beloved dining destinations. Discover the full menu and book your table for this weekend here.
