Review: Equium Social, Mayfield Newcastle

Cafes, Eat, Travel / 1 September 2022

If you’re looking for an eatery with a relaxed, feel-good vibe, Newcastle’s popular Equium Social is where to head.

Located in Mayfield, one of Newcastle’s oldest suburbs, it’s a short drive from the town’s centre. When the town was first established in the 1880s, it was considered one of the most prestigious suburbs to live in. Today, it’s a thriving cultural hub known for its antique shopping, private galleries and hipster cafes.

The cafe serves wholesome, ethically sourced, fresh food and there are lots of great options for vegans.

The menu offers a wide selection of breakfast offerings from ricotta hotcakes to kimchi pancakes. Highly recommended was the Chook Roll ($19), lightly pickled cabbage and carrot slaw, crispy chicken, house fermented chilli sauce mayo on a brioche bun. After much consideration, my companion went for the Rye & Potato Waffle with ocean trout gravlax, herbed cashew cheese, pickles and poached egg dressed in greens ($22). We also had to have the Hash ($19), consisting of hearty vegetable hash, sitting on smoky cauliflower puree, topped with chimmi churri dressed salad, spiced pumpkin seeds and added a poached egg ($3.50).

Patrons can expect decent sized-servings and I only wish we’d had room to try their smoothies or Healing Cacao with medicinal mushrooms. They also brew their own Kombucha and Ginger Beer.

The café offers indoor and outdoor seating. Inside, the spacious café is bright and welcoming with lots of greenery and plants. The décor has an industrial vibe style, with metal work featuring on the wooden tables. I also loved that Equium Social features local artists’ work on the walls.

With a proven reputation for good coffee, Equium Social is a great spot for a breakfast.
