Sydney’s favourite grumpy baker isn’t so grumpy after all—he’s celebrating. And for good reason!
The much-loved, family-run bakery that’s been serving up golden, crusty loaves and flaky pastries for over 20 years has just opened its 12th venue. But this isn’t just another outpost. The Grumpy Baker & Bar in Potts Point is bringing something extra to the table: a bar, a dinner menu, and a whole new way to experience the brand’s signature Middle Eastern flavours.
Taking over the legendary Macleay Street Bistro space at 73A Macleay st, this latest venture is the brainchild of founder Michael Cthurmer, his wife Deborah, and daughter Lily. The team has transformed the venue with creamy neutrals, handmade tiles, textured walls, and tan leather banquette seating—creating a space that feels as warm and inviting as the scent of freshly baked challah.
By day, it’s everything you know and love about The Grumpy Baker—sourdough, pastries, pies, and a full café menu. Expect Middle Eastern-inspired breakfast and brunch staples, including Shakshuka, Challah French Toast, Hotcakes with Praline Butter, Green Omelettes, and Turkish Bourekas. There’s also the ultimate comfort food—Chicken Schnitzel in Challah with Pickled Cabbage and a Romanian Salad. And yes, everything is made fresh on-site, with baking kicking off at 7 am daily.
But as the sun sets, the bakery takes on a whole new personality, morphing into a neighbourhood bar and eatery. Think warm, freshly baked challah paired with harissa butter, smoky grilled meats, and share plates packed with bold Middle Eastern flavours—roasted eggplant with tahini, spicy Moroccan fish, and house-made pickles. Everything on the menu is crafted in-house with a focus on fresh, seasonal produce.
To match the food, Deborah Cthurmer has curated a tight yet refined wine list featuring small-batch Australian producers. The cocktail menu, meanwhile, plays with Middle Eastern influences, offering signature drinks infused with pomegranate, rosewater, and citrus, alongside classic tipples for those who like to keep it simple.
“We’re so excited to bring The Grumpy Baker experience to Potts Point,” says Michael. “This location is particularly special because it allows us to share the rustic food I grew up with, alongside our freshly baked goods, in a warm and inviting setting.”
