A long lunch at Me-Gal by Matt Stone
Me-Gal by Matt Stone is a harbourside restaurant on Head Road in Mosman, where chef and author Matt Stone cooks seasonal Australian produce for locals and visitors. Think the Opera House and Harbour Bridge across the water, bushland all around, and a kitchen that wastes very little.
Matt Stone has built his name on cooking that wastes as little as possible, and here that means making things from scratch and preserving through fermentation, pickling and dehydration. The menu moves with the seasons and leans on Australian growers and producers. You can order à la carte or hand the decisions over with the shared chef’s menu.
The setting does a lot of the talking, but the wine list is worth your attention too. Half of it comes from female winemakers, with plenty of biodynamic, organic and carbon neutral producers, plus First Nations owned labels including Mt Yengo, Munda Wines and Bidja Wines. Stone’s own label, Wines by Matt Stone, is on there as well. The interiors were reimagined by Kat Thompson of Five Foot One, with earthy tones and natural textures that nod to the meeting of land and saltwater. The name was chosen with guidance from Traditional Custodians and references that saltwater.
