Surry Hill’s local Keg & Brew is back with a $10 million facelift and rooftop bar

Bars, Drink, Sydney / 3 October 2019

It’s been months in the making, but Surry Hill’s most historic hotel has just reopened its doors in time for summer.

After months of renovations, Surry Hills’ beloved drinking hole Keg & Brew has reopened with a fresh new look. Poised on the corner of Foveaux and Commonwealth Streets, the suburb’s changing face has ushered in a new era for this local favourite. The late 1880s, one-time terrace house is stepping proudly into 2019 with a bottom-to-top $10 million refurbishment.

Over the past few years, the venue has seen a series of small-scale renovations. But, this latest upgrade brings a bold new direction for Keg & Brew, firmly solidifying the venue’s place in Surry Hills’ blossoming bar and dining scene. With summer well and truly in sight, this stylish reincarnation comes just in time for the long weekend too.

The renovation project has been a painstaking operation in following with heritage requirements. This attention to detail ensures the original exterior of the building is retained, while features added by previous owners have been removed to restore the building to its former glory. Inside, the venue’s original staircase and wall layouts remain to ensure the venue stays true to its roots.

Now under the management of The Good Beer Company, responsible for the likes of Paddington’s Four in Hand Hotel, the team worked alongside Woodhouse Danks architects and John Cameron Constructions to bring the rebuild to life. The final result? The ground floor bar is kitted out with 31 of the hotel’s 50 original taps, pouring a mix of craft beer and mainstream brews, with the traditional pub vibe well and truly alive.

Heading upstairs, the first floor delivers a 70-seat restaurant and bar space, a far cry from this floor’s previous life as the home of the hotel’s residential guests. Here you’ll also found the second-floor function room and bar, a flexible space that can be divided into smaller breakout rooms with the capacity to host up to 120 guests.

And the cherry on top? The newly launched open-air rooftop offers stunning, sweeping panoramic views of the city, complete with a bar, pizza oven and one of Australia’s largest state-of-the-art television screens.
