Bad Hombres Brings Plant-Based Mexican Eats To The Heart Of Bondi

Drink, Eat, Sydney / 23 December 2020

The hombres might be bad but the food is damn good!

Following their success in Surry Hills, Bad Hombres has developed a cult-like following with foodies across Sydney and now, they’ve opened up shop on Hall Street in the heart of Bondi. Chef Greg Molinaro has designed a 100% plant-based menu that is also entirely vegan and gluten free, which means that you can enjoy all your favourite Mexican flavours no matter what dietary requirements you might have.

While usually vegan versions of greasy classics pale in comparison to their traditional meaty, cheesy counterparts, Bad Hombres is serving up some of the best Mexican food available in Sydney – vegan or otherwise! The team offers creative takes on traditional Mexican flavours that make Bad Hombres both iconic and unmissable. The menu is designed to be shared which makes it the perfect spot for catch-ups with friends over a margarita (or two!).

When we visited we started with the classic chips and guacamole with charred jalapeño and pico de gallo ($9.5), before moving onto charred corn with vegan chipotle mayo and coated in sweet pepita powder ($10) which is succulent, buttery, and just the right side of spicy. Next, we moved over into taco territory which, as we all know, is the true test of any Mexican establishment. With soft and subtle tortillas and a perfectly balanced filling of lightly fried miso eggplant with pineapple habanero salsa and a sweet miso caramel sauce (3 for $15) the flavour profile is inspired – the perfect mix of sweet and savoury.

Moving onto the major shared plates, you’ll be bowled over by the big flavours of the BH cauliflower ($26.5). An absolute behemoth of a vegetable, seasoned with oregano-paprika salt, cashew crema, it’s served with corn tortillas, salsa verde, coriander, and onion which means you can choose to either make your tacos or just eat everything piece by piece.

On the drinks front, you can expect a great range of juicy natural wines as well as all your favourite Mexcian-inspired, tequila cocktails ranging from margaritas (both plain and chili spiked) to lychee Palomas. They’re keen to be the next go-to spot for group catch-ups and they’re majorly sweetening the deal with specials running throughout the week with ‘half-price natties’ every Wednesday, $12 tequila Thursdays, and $20 sangria jugs and share plates on Sundays – the perfect cure to those Sunday scaries.

Bad Hombres Bondi is located at 08/75-79 Hall St, Bondi Beach. They are open from 5 pm – 10 pm from Tuesday – Sunday. Check out their website
